The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. And as for you, command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan’”. And Joshua said to the people of Israel, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God.” And Joshua said, “Here is how you shall know that the living God is among you and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hives, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is passing over before you into the Jordan. Now therefore take twelve men from the tribes of Israel, from each tribe a man. And when the soles of the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off from flowing, and the waters coming down from above shall stand in one heap. Joshua 3:7-13
You may read this and just think that this is just another Old Testament event and just breeze through the passage (especially those city names, yikes). But I read this passage recently and God just hit me hard with a revelation!
Just a little back story on Joshua and where they are… Joshua was Moses’ right hand man! But Moses has now died and Joshua is the new leader of the Israelites, filling the position that Moses had held for the last 40 years. Joshua is challenged with taking this new generation, who have lived as nomads wandering the wilderness, on a mission to conquer the Canaanite kings and armies to be able to inhabit the Promise Land, the land God has given them. Joshua is now flashing back to 40 years before, standing in front of the Jordan River, the same place he stood with Moses.
Let’s look back on the part of the passage that says “When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand STILL IN the Jordan”. First off, if I was Joshua, I would be like, “WHOA! Moses just had to lift up his rod in the air for the water to split and I have to tell these priests that they have to get INTO the rushing waters of the Jordan river?!” (Comparison will get you quick, but that is a whole other blog post!).
How many times has God told you that you must face the storm, endure the storm, stand STILL in the storm before you can receive your blessing?
God will sometimes take us on a route we don’t expect in order to display His glory. It seemed to make little sense to lead Israel across the Jordan when the people could have entered Canaan from the South and completely avoided the water, but God had other plans. As the people trusted the Lord and His Word, He worked a great miracle.
God pushed back the waters the moment the ark of the covenant was in the water. The pushing back of the water symbolizes God pushing back the Canaanites. Crossing the Red Sea with Moses required faith, yes, they were running from the Egyptians, but crossing the Jordan to invade Canaan took MUCH MORE faith because once they stepped foot in the water and crossed the Jordan, there was no turning back and they would have to face their enemies. God knew the Israelites didn’t need to just hear about God being with them, they needed to see it.
I want you to know today, that even though God has possibly put you in a season of storms, a hurricane season and it won’t stop raining, just be STILL, He is with you. Your miracle, your breakthrough, your healing is COMING!
